I ordered this as a replacement for my 11 year old Mac charger. I never had a problem with the battery on my Mac becoming warm, When I went to use it the new charger the first time it destroyed the battery. All of a sudden the battery was at o and not charging and scorching hot. Super disappointed

I’ve gone through at least 3 of these adapters since 2012 and this one broke faster than the others did. One day this week, the smaller cord on the block began to chaff and give the short on adding power. Normally, when it starts shorting, you have at least a year left and you might be able to wind the smaller cord next to the block with electrical tape to keep it going. But not this time. Just a few days after I noticed the chaffing, the small cable just broke off without any force applied. I’ve never seen it break so quickly after the chaffing started. It’s a horrible adapter and I need to check out the cheaper knock-offs because $79 for something that won’t last at least 4 years, is a waste of money.

This charger works fine but you have to make sure it doesn’t get too hot when charging or it will easily burn itself out. I’m in my third one in 11 years. A little TLC wouldn’t hurt either.

I’ll start by saying that I previously purchased this charger (for my 2012 15″ Macbook Pro) from a different online retailer more than once & it crapped out on me each time… After the most recent incident, I was forced to use a 60W charger (sourced seemingly new/unused at my local thrift shop) as these 85W chargers aren’t exactly cheap. Surprisingly enough, that 60W charger did the job for a while, but it ran VERY hot, & the rubber around the wiring gradually started disintegrating. On a couple of occasions, it even sparked when I plugged it in & I had to reset my circuit breaker (obviously dangerous). Eventually, it completely stopped charging, & as I use my laptop for work, I had no choice but to go ahead & grab another 85W charger (but NOT from the retailer I had previously purchased it from); Enter good old AMAZON :)…

Now anyone who has been on Amazon long enough knows that you must be VERY careful when purchasing certain items on here as it can be hard to tell what is authentic & what is not (especially when Amazon is not the “seller”). In short, I took a chance & purchased this charger on here (seeing that it was shipped AND sold by Amazon), and I can say that it is 100% LEGIT/AUTHENTIC/COMPLETE. It comes in the original box/plastic shrink-wrapping, it includes the extension power cable/info card/etc. (EXACTLY as you would receive it from your local Apple store), it fires right up as expected & works FLAWLESSLY!

I can’t speak for the few reviewers who claimed that this charger was getting extremely hot. My guess is that it was a mismatch with their laptop (similar to my prior mismatch, as some require this 85W charger, while others require one of lower wattage or vice versa). As stated before, I found a 60W charger, used it on my 2012 15″ Macbook Pro & it would get EXTREMELY hot… Well, my laptop is supposed to use the 85W charger, of course, but when that charger went south, I had to use the 60W charger for a while & that was my experience; I’m guessing that these customers had a smiliar type of mismatch. In any event, if you’re looking to replace the original/OEM 85W charger for your Mackbook/Macbook Pro & you’re concerned about authenticity, LOOK NO FURTHER!!! This is ABSOLUTELY the real deal (as long as you see “sold by Amazon” AND “ships from Amazon” on the right side of the product page). Hope this helps somebody to rest easy 🙂

This is a brand-new-in-box Apple MagSafe 1 85-watt adapter, just as advertised, in 100% off-the-shelf mint condition. The lack of 5-stars should not reflect badly on the seller, but it should be well-known to anyone who uses this product that they don’t last, however there is no better option on the market. Yes, it WILL get very hot, but it’ll charge your battery in a freakin’ jiffy, especially if you’re not pushing the machine when you’re charging it. Give it room to breathe, because it’s only method of dispersing the heat it generates is passive radiation.

I advise anyone who can to put some heat-shrink on the wire between the “brick” and the cable connecting to the machine, as well as on the connector, as this is where the cable tends to fail. Beware, when the metal shielding underneath begins to fray, it CAN spark – though the risk of fire is marginal, it IS there. This will extend the life of your power supply a bit. It ain’t gonna last forever though.

On the other hand, I consider it pretty damned good value that I’m using a MacBook Pro that I built from parts for a little more than $500, and while I’ve had to purchase three power supplies – and received at least as many as “donations” – everyday, nearly ten years after the thing went on sale for WELL over two or three (or even four?) times that much. Show me another laptop that lasts a decade.

Sure, you’ve got to replace some parts on it, upgrade others – a battery here, a hard drive there, additional RAM, fan, MoBo, power supply – but come on, even your car needs the oil changed and new tires. Even newer Apple laptops (and most older ones too, if I’m being completely honest) don’t last this long, and I’m not aware of any others that will either. Hell, most laptops you just CAN’T replace parts & upgrade them. My partner’s got a MacBook Air that she’s going to need to buy a new MoBo for just so she can get her data off of the proprietary hard drive. That’s almost criminally bad design.

Eventually, the operating system will be entirely out of date and therefore insecure on my machine, and replacement parts will become more scarce, but that’s a few years off hopefully. Maybe I’ll have found a newer laptop to use by then, or maybe I’ll just buy up broken machines by the lot & start running Linux exclusively. Maybe I’ll be using a tablet with wireless keyboard? Maybe I’ll have some kind of bionic brain-computer thingy. Who can say?

By the way don’t go doing this for yourself – I need those parts. 😉

If you’ve already got a machine that uses this power supply, congrats: You found a replacement that’ll work until you inevitably need a new one. Let’s hope they remain available!
