Boy… how I wanted to hate Windows 8. I have a pathological hatred for calling programs ‘apps’ and hate everything so God awful simple that the GUI looks like something out of Playschool. I still hate those aspects with a vengeance, don’t get me wrong. But quite frankly I don’t see what the fuss is about. The Windows 8 interface has taken all of 10 minutes to get used too with all its simpleton focused big brash boxes; and it’s evident that all control over the PC remains intact for all those non-simpletons who actually remember what it was like to have to understand how an operating system works.

As for this Acer laptop… I am absolutely blown away. My first PC cost me well over £2000 in 1997; the last Sony Vaio laptop I bought in 2006 cost me well over £1500. This cost me a fraction over 200 quid and functions flawlessly.

You gotta love technological advancement. This is a brilliant laptop at an unbelievable price; and although I utterly hate the practice of reducing an operating system down to a series of big, bold boxes a retarded squirrel with ADHD could comprehend, I nevertheless love the operating system too.

The only problem is that the new generation are so far removed from how a PC works with this simplification, that give it a few years and I’ll be surprised if people can actually plug a PC in without being spoon fed a bright big, ‘plug in here’ box.

    ———————————————————————————————————————–

Update: One problem I have found is that the ‘right click’ function doesn’t work on the touchpad. I’ve tried updating the touchpad driver with no success; but am pretty sure it’s some form of driver / windows 8 conflict. No clear solution on the Acer support site unfortunately. Once I’ve sorted it, I’ll update here. But if you get one and experience a similar problem – you might have to plug in a mouse in the first instance. But apart from that minor irritation, the touchpad is extremely responsive.

Solution: Eureka! After being driven half crazy trying to resolve the above issue I happened to tap the touchpad with two simultaneous fingers and guess what? Yep… right click worked!!! So I’m rewriting the Acer manual on this one… to right click don’t tap in the bottom right hand corner of the touchpad as instructed (you’d have more luck getting a right click using the Force) instead tap anywhere on the touchpad with two fingers.

    I can sleep now!

Delivered super quick and well packaged in a branded box.

Acer Aspire ES1-512 15.6-inch Laptop Notebook (Black) – (Intel Celeron N2840 2.16GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, LAN, WLAN, Integrated Graphics, Windows 8.1 ).

    Box Contains
    Acer Notebook
    Battery
    AC Adapter
    User Documentation

    I absolutely love this.
Navigation is easy to use with a precision touchpad and chiclet keyboard, which has been designed specifically to improve accuracy and speed.
Once fully charged i can use it for around 7 hours.
Comes installed with windows 8.1 but recently updated it to windows 10.
Happy that it has a dvd drive as most laptops dont have them installed.
It appears a lot quicker than our old PC and the screen quality is very good.
Very pleased with my laptop, great purchase.
I would recommend anyone to buy this laptop.

  3. Mr. R. J. Went

After a dell 15z ultrabook blew it’s motherboard twice in a year and dell refused to fix it whilst under warranty I refused to buy another expensive laptop.

I went for one of these and swapped out the harddrive with a crucial bx100 250gb ssd (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00RQA6TEI/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=B00RQA6TEI&linkCode=as2&tag=seafriwebdes-21&linkId=7R7URAR5JGFFJNS5).
Create the recovery drive using an external hd or usb stick, replace the internal drive and then boot from the recovery to install the operating system and then get a case for the 500gb disk it comes with and use it as an external drive.

The result is that it starts up from shutdown in about 5 seconds. Photoshop loads in 5 seconds, fireworks about 7 seconds. Also, because of the reduced power for the hd, when fully charged the battery life is estimated at around 8 hours.

Size and weight-wise, it’s not really much larger or heavier than the ultrabook and the casing is a lot more robust (although plasticy).

I work as a web developer and have a localhost running, ide, fireworks and a couple of web browsers open at the same time and haven’t really noticed any lags. That said I’m not sure how it would handle any hardcore gaming.

The display isn’t full hd (1366×768) but good enough for a second computer/laptop (the same resolution as the dell which was 4x the price).

Very happy with the purchase (£290 for the laptop, drive and a case for the old one) and will be sticking to laptops like this in the future.

i tried to cancel this order because after 3 days of odering it the same laptop at argos with higher spec reduced by 70% making it the same price as this laptop which is £229 and it had 8gb ram and 1tb hardrive. Amazon didnt update me saying this item has been dispatched it was on “preparing for dispatch” and then they sent me the email saying it has been dispatched on the day it arrived.

Well i will make this short and quick, This is a wonderful laptop, has everything i need even with the low budget graphics card which is apparantly common in many laptops yet hardy any detail on google but high powered games run on low resolution smoothly.

Oaky so the bad parts, first of when i opended it, it would’nt start, i pressed the power on butfon and it would’nt start, then i assumed the battery was empty so i put it on charge and pressed again and it turned on then found out that the battery was 95% when i switched on and i dont know why, i read someone say here that they returned it because it wont turn on. and i am not happy with the touchpad, the left and right click aare there but not seperated its all one big pad shoved int he far left corner! it does’nt even click sometimes when i tap it i have to click it by pressing it!

Overall this is a great a laptop, its the the windows 8.1 which is frustrating to use, i dont mind the idea of having apps as i can still install .exe but i just wished it wasnt so much with clutter, i mean everyday i see 45 to a 100 apps installed which i dont even know how to cancel or check on the windows app store as there is no option to unistall or check fully so i really hate the windows 8.1 and looking for ways to remove this junk

Also there needs to be a receipt or something stating i have my 1 year gurantee but all i got was a instruction manual which stated this on few words, not good! plus today my battery was empty as i had fallen asleep whilst it was on so i plugged the charger and left it for a while, brought it downstaires and switched it on, and after a minute later the mousepad stopped working, but everything else was working like keys, so i forced closed it and turned it back on and now its fine.
I think its the operating system.

Excellent laptop for the price. I’ll rate each part in stars 1 – 5

    Speed and usability ***** (5)
Computer is very quick to load and use, no issues as of yet with any of my windows 7 software. Windows 8.1 runs very well and is quite a pleasure to use. I like to install Classic Shell for the Start Menu interface as I can’t getaway with the metro interface. Already the Windows 10 upgrade has been showing up, so there is something to look forward to also (may give it a few months though before install or VM it). The laptop looks and feels good and isn’t too much to carry around. There is a DVDR burner hidden away on the right side of the machine which is very responsive and fast to burn DVD’s.

    Keyboard ***** (5)
The keyboard layout is very nice, the keys are spaced very well and it feels great to type on, can get lots done with very little errors in typing.

    Track pad *** (3)
The track pad is ok and very responsive, however there are a few times where the track pad has a mind of its own and moves the mouse pointer to the far right of the screen. This doesn’t happen a lot but can be a pain when trying to navigate quickly to get something done!

    Screen **** (4)
The screen is bright and displays clear and well, however there is a lot of reflecting from the screen surface which may annoy some people.

All in all I highly recommend this laptop for every day use. Though I have not tried this laptop with any games. The 2.16GHz CPU & 4GB of RAM make this a pleasure to use with Windows 8.1 (x64).
