Having produced podcasts in the past, I have used a wide variety of wireless lavalier microphones, from Behringer to Sennheiser and everything in between. Some sound more dead, while others pick up more ambient noise or static. I can say that these Shure ones definitely fall at the top end of the recording quality spectrum. Everything comes through very clearly.

The biggest problem is that without the receiver, the use case is somewhat limited. For example, there was a day that my work Bluetooth headset died, so I though that maybe these Shure lavs, which I happened to be carrying due to the highly portable kit case, could save me. I could not get them to work in Zoom, since recording really only happens via the Shure app. I have the receiver, so I tried plugging that in to my laptop; unfortunately, my laptop did not want to recognize the receiver as a microphone, even when plugged in via the minijack.

Luckily, this kit does sync up with my camera though when using the receiver, so it is great for shooting quick videos with high quality sound. If your plan is to use the receiver on top of a camera that can shoot high quality video, this may be worth the investment. If you want to use these in versatile ways, maybe not so much.

QUICK TAKE: I’ve gotten into the habit of doing a lot of recording while working in the field. Noting different things. One of the use cases has been recording while working on horseback riding training or training horses in general. There’s a lot going on in this case. Wind and the elements, different levels of noise coming from the rider and tack, etc. These mics have been an absolute awesome addition to our simple recording as our backup source to the static videos we’re running as we have one for the trainer and the rider and the voice recording quality is on-part with the other wireless mics we were previously using. This makes the setup incredibly easy.

There’s a few things you’ll want to know about this particular setup though. The mics use an app on the phone and that’s going to be the way you control recording, etc. If you want to use these mics with any other type of recording rig you’re going to need to purchase the receiver separately. I can tell you that the mic quality is QUITE GOOD on these through the phone connection so if you’re looking for the ultimate versatility I’d imagine that having the receiver on hand would be great as well. So far we haven’t had a need for it, but we may end up getting the receiver just to have it available for different live audio setups, etc.

The mics batteries last for an extended period of time which is a definite plus and also are IPX4 rated – which is PERFECT for our use case where there’s a lot of dust and material working around. Even moisture as we work through different scenarios etc.

These mics ARE expensive, but they are a solid investment and truly best-in-class for this type of device. Paired with a receiver I imagine they’d be suitable for higher-end work as well (video shoots, etc). Shure really has updated this line with a fantastic product.

    THE GOOD STUFF:
    – Incredible recording quality
    – Simple setup and use with phone app for recording
    – IPX4 rated for elements resistance
    – EXCELLENT battery life
    – Great connection quality at quite a significant range
    – Clips on easily

    THE NOT SO GOOD STUFF:
    – Need to buy a receiver separately if you want to use with anything other than app
    – Expensive (but you are paying for a bulletproof quality option)

FINAL THOUGHTS: As someone who has used a SIGNIFICANT number of microphones in my video editing / musician career I can tell you Shure is a solid brand that rarely misfires. This mic combo is fantastic and worth the extra bit you’ll pay for solid performance that’s going to last quite some time. This is a very easy product to recommend.

Just want to start with the overall summary of: expensive but worth it! I’ve been familiar with Shure since I bought my SM7 a few years back and have been using the Rode wireless GO II for my outdoor content for a while now but knew this would be a step up in sound quality if Shure’s other products are anything to go by. The sound quality that you get from these tiny little things is insane

Bought the Receiver kit for Movemic as I sometimes record with my Sony A7 which works fine on an initial full day test, but I didn’t realize until after I purchased that I can also use both the mics directly with my phone without the receiver… I just needed to download the shure app from the app store and I didn’t need to use the receiver. Pretty cool feature being able to connect two mics to the phone and was also able to record all my stuff in their app which seems to work fine for what I need. Also was able to configure audio settings like gain, limiter, compression in the app and receiver to just tweak the sound depending on who is wearing the mics. Also found the presets for all of this stuff to be good enough if I’m honest.

Haven’t tested battery life to the maximum yet but haven’t ran out of battery yet on my first full day of testing so can’t complain there.

If I was being picky only negative I can give is they didn’t supply a lightning cable so I can’t use my receiver with my iPhone 14 to use it with other apps. Turns out I can buy it separately from Shure but I’m fine with using their app and not using the receiver with my phone so doesn’t bother me too much

All in I’m super impressed by MoveMic from shure and it definitely feels a step up compared to the Rode I’ve been using for the past couple years. Yes it’s expensive vs the others, but I’d say it’s well worth the extra!

    Would give it 9.5/10
