First of all, skip the crappy FRS “walkie-talkies” and invest in these. I’ve seen the other radios on Amazon. Buyer beware!

I bought a set of six to communicate with co-workers in a sheet metal fabrication facility and they have gone above and beyond. We use them with the “Retevis Covert Acoustic Tube In-ear Air Acoustic Earpiece Headset,” also available on Amazon, and I couldn’t be more pleased.

You will DEFINITELY want to invest in a programming cable. I bought the “Baofeng USB Programming Cable” (which can be found at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008RZJHJU) and downloaded the software to program my radios for free. All the information and resources you could possibly need for programming these radios is at […]

As for the radios themselves, they’ve performed flawlessly. While they aren’t the most solidly constructed radios on the market, they are quite well put together for the price. The range is quite impressive considering the power output. I have also gotten two full days of use out of a single battery charge.

My only complaint with these radios concerns the earpiece/mic which is included with each radio. To put it bluntly, they suck. The earpiece is awkward and uncomfortable, and the sound quality and positioning of the microphone is bad.

First of all, this walkie is the double of a Retevis unit (777 I think) right down to the flashlight. Interestingly, the BaoFeng’s rating are consistenly slightly lower than those of the Retevis and the reviews are clearly skewed towards commercial use. I can only think that’s due to families buying the Retevis since the name sounds less sketchy and having much lower expectations that contractors, apartment managers, construction companies etc who don’t care what the name is on the walkie, just that it’s cheap. Even so, how can you expect robust quality at less the $20/ piece. That is simply absurd; ten years ago, these would have been rubbish walkies, but Chinese building standards have grown enormously. Yes the battery storage capacity isn’t accurate and the range is not as stated by BaoFeng. But that’s to be expected.

What’s not to like? These walkies are unbelievably inexpensive and function very well. Just know that you’re not buying a $300 Motorola and you will be pleasantly surprised. The battery life is quite good considering the price, they charge properly and have audible channel switching. The included earpieces provide good sound fidelity (though we switched out to acoustic tube earwigs w/mics since they look cool for my kids – very Secret Service). All in all, I can’t imagine a better walkie talkie available for the money spent. My children know they can only use these when they have belts on since the clip will keep the walkie from hitting the ground, not the case when clipped to a waistband.

None of these have hit the ground yet, nor have we had them long enough to know whether the earpiece cables will break easily. But so far so good.

I ordered these as I’ve grown tired of the nonsense that has flooded the market when it comes to the FRS/GMRS pre-programmed handhelds out there. As someone who is licensed for the GMRS frequencies, I decided to try these out exclusively on the GMRS frequencies. Each radio comes with 16 channels (selectable), a small stock antenna, an earpiece with built-in mic, a belt clip, a wrist-wrap and a battery. First off – DO NOT USE THE RADIOS UNTIL AFTER YOU’VE PROGRAMMED THEM! with the pre-programmed frequencies, you may interfere with local law enforcement or other off-limits frequencies! Yes, you have to find the GMRS frequencies. REMEMBER: These radios are set to 5 watts TX power. If you are not licensed for GMRS, buy the name brands – as they will be pre-programmed for FRS frequencies and you may use those. The hardest part is finding the software to program the radios. I won’t paste a link here to where I received the download so as not to upset either Amazon or the website owner. However, It is searchable on the Internet. You will need the programming cable so make sure you purchase that. Once you have the frequencies you want, you can copy and paste them into the software. Save the file then upload it to the radio. I did it several times to make a few tweaks to the radio’s settings as well as to upload the frequencies I wanted. Once completed, I did some minor testing at home and the audio was crisp, clear and loud. I took them with me camping and had my daughter use one while I used another. She did a little bit of hiking (within a mile of my location) and there were no drop-offs, static on the transmissions or inaudible transmissions (besides those of user error). The battery life is amazing! We used them with the power turned on the whole time we were camping (2 full days) and although the battery came close to dying, we were still using full power without drop-off! I’m going to perform some more extensive testing on these, like taking them out for longer distances to see just how far they’ll reach in a more urban setting. I’m sure that they will have more limited distance due to structures and hills, but I’d like to try anyway. The only drawback to the radios I received was that two of them came in with the power/volume know ‘tight’ to turn which indicates a ‘bent’ component. Otherwise, they worked perfectly fine. REMEMBER: You will need to obtain a GMRS license to use these radios AND you must program them before using them so as not to interfere with local law enforcement! A GMRS license is easy to obtain. There are no exams/tests for the license, just a simple purchase. And, the license is good for you and everyone in your immediate family (spouse/child/parent).
