It’s impossible to review a machine like this completely independently from the operating system it runs. I note that because I’m primarily a Mac and Linux user (although I have a couple of powerful Windows machines in my house for gaming). Some of my notes will be specific to Windows, but I’ll try to keep it focused on the LG components.

When I pulled the LG Gram 17 out of its (minimal, but appropriate) packaging, I showed it to my wife. The first thing she said was, “it looks heavy.” I then handed it to her and she immediately responded: “Oh, it really isn’t.” In fact, it is very light. So much so that it feels like it might break if handled roughly.

I went to plug this in to my workstation where I normally have my Mac. That is one Thunderbolt cable that connects to my monitor and drives my keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc. Unfortunately, the USB-C ports are only on the left side of the machine (my Macbook Pro i9 has them on both sides) and my monitor is on the right side and the cable is short. I had to order a longer cable. Once that came in a couple of days later (the local mega-electronics store was useless as always and didn’t have any in stock), the machine worked flawlessly with all my peripherals and charges from the monitor like the Macbook.

I write a lot of code (Rust) and do a lot of network management activities. I’m comfortable with Windows (the first version I used was Windows for Workgroups 3.11 in the early 90s) but it’s been a while since I’ve used it for anything important. I immediately updated the software and removed some of the garbage they have pre-installed (some Laplink migration tool, McAfee, etc.) LG didn’t make this nearly as onerous as some other vendors do. Although I did select to not use McAfee at the outset and was surprised when it popped up like a zombie out of nowhere when I tried to install something it thought was suspicious (false positive). I tracked McAfee down and ripped it out for good and activated Windows Defender. I updated all the packages in Windows and the LG-specific platform tools.

I installed Windows Subsystem for Linux and fired up Windows Terminal and a Debian instance. From there, I went through the process of configuring git, build tools, emacs, etc. I was pleasantly surprised to see that GUI Linux apps (like Emacs) work seamlessly now. The delta between running Linux on a Linux desktop and Linux on a Windows desktop is getting really narrow.

I cloned some of my repositories on to the machine and began building them. Performance is on par with my Mac, if not a little faster. Overall, I think Windows with this machine may stick for me for a while. The last time I tried was several years ago and it lasted about an hour (right up until the moment I started fighting with problems with high DPI applications and device drivers – I packaged it right up and took it back). There haven’t been any red flags like that so far.

The keyboard is pretty sad to type on. But it does have a full number pad, which is really nice. And plugged in to my workstation, I don’t notice that. I can add multiple desktops and swipe back and forth like I do on my Mac which is great. I had to futz with the registry (which is absurd) to change the mouse wheel rolling direction, but at least it’s adjustable.

I also use Logic and a lot of music applications on my Mac, and I know from repeated experience that Windows will never make me happy in that arena, so I’m not even going to fight that battle. But as a programming and business productivity tool, I think this laptop will work really well. To the extent that Windows can get out of the way and let me use Linux, it’s a winner. This machine has already found a useful slot in my day-to-day work.

Worst case, I’ve read that Linux works fine on other LG Gram models, so I can probably just load Pop!_OS on it. But I’m going to persevere with Windows and WSL for now. I think it may finally be a good compromise.
