This printer uses a chip on each cartridge. It will claim a cartridge that is 75% full of ink is empty and if even one color is coded as empty then it will not let you print anything, not even in black only. There is no work around. It also will brick your printer if you try to use 3rd party cartridges with new firmware update. Don’t do business with Epson they are a scam company. You will be bombarded with popups to buy their ink from them.

This is the BEST CD/DVD Printer I’ve ever had; I was having problems when I first tried to get it going. START with the startup 1 and 2 before putting the ink cartridges in the printer. I put the Ink cartridges in the printer before turning it on and I kept getting Open the printer and remove the safty thngs inside, Close the lid and press continue. I did this all day and then I did what the START-UP told me to do, and I removed all the ink from the printer, and it came to the step to install the ink and press installed. It works a lot better than the Epson R200 I bought 2 months ago. I give this printer a 100 on the scale of 1 to 10.

I am so disappointed in this printer! I work from home several days a week, and need a printer for regular black printing on white paper. My HP printer finally died, so I bought one of these because it had a mid-range price and all the features I wanted. The first problem I encountered was when it absolutely refused to connect to my wifi. It would connect, all looked fine, and then it would disconnect and tell me it couldn’t locate the wifi (the router is 8 feet away, in the same room, and easily reaches every room on both floors of my house). After multiple attempts, I gave up, and sent my husband to Walmart to buy a USB cord to connect it directly to my computer. Highly annoying, but not the end of the world. But after about three weeks of light use, the black cartridge showed as empty. I couldn’t find one locally, so ordered it directly from Epson through the app on my computer. When it arrived, I put it into the printer, and kept getting an error message saying it didn’t recognize the cartridge. I took it out and put it back in at least four times, then Googled to see what other people were saying. I tried every suggestion I saw, including those from Epson itself, and finally, somehow, I must have found the magic sauce, because it suddenly started to work. So far, so good, although I lost a half-hour of time on a work day to get it working. Fast-forward a week. Today, working from home, I tried to print a document and again, it’s saying it doesn’t recognize the cartridge. I took it out, looked it over, cleaned the connections, put it back in, but nothing works. So I ordered another cartridge, this time from Amazon, thinking that the first one must be defective. Then I Googled again, and found an Epson help page that didn’t show up for me before (worded my question differently this time), only to find that IF ANY OF THE COLOR CARTRIDGES ARE OUT OF INK, YOU CAN’T PRINT IN BLACK. Nice gig Epson has going, that every time any cartridge gets low, customers have to purchase the entire set to use their black cartridge which still has ink in it. I’ve now spent $250 for the printer, and another $50 for two black ink cartridges that won’t work because Epson wants me to spend even more money for an entire set of cartridges before it will print. And what do I have to show for the money I’ve spent? A very expensive paperweight.

I am now, yet again, unable to do my work unless I spend yet more money and buy an entire set of ink cartridges. I’m sorely torn between doing that (over and over again) and tossing the six-week-old printer in the trash and buying another HP, which is what I should have bought in the first place.

I will never buy another Epson product again.
